The almost impossible task of Tony Blair
Tony Blair has started his new career as special Middle East envoy for the quartet. He has arrived in Tel-Aviv presumably to begin his mission to help broker a peace deal between the Palestinians and the Israelis. He may miss being the prime minister of great Britain. His task is daunting and borders on the impossible for a number of reasons. Firstly there are two separate entities in the Palestinian authority one in Gaza and one in Judea and Samaria. These factions Hamas in Gaza and Fatah in Judea and Samaria are two complete separate entities that have become bitter enemies. Even assuming that some quasi-agreement can be reached between the Fatah and Isreal the Hamas will be out of the picture. This will make any unlikely agreement completely useless. It should not be forgotten that he Hamas is by the far the most popular Palestinian movement and won an overwhelming majority in the last elections. It is unclear how Mr Blair can move things forward even as missile attacks continue to hit southern Israeli towns near the Israeli border. The Hamas for its part is rejecting outright its isolation in Blairs expected meetings. Hey its something to do. |
