Bush warns Iran again The President of the United States George Bush has again threatened Iran over its Nuclear Program. He was quoted as saying that Iran’s policy of advancing its nuclear capabilities will bring a nuclear holocaust on the region. He is determined to confront Iran’s nuclear proliferation with force if necessary. If Mr. Bush wants to confuse Iran and the rest of the world on what exactly the US will do and when, he has been very successful. There seems to be great confusion as to how and when a US attack on Iran will happen. Many seem to think that Bush is trying to diplomatically solve the problem by threatening force. It is clear to all that this has not and will not deter Iran from continuing its current policy. That being said, what now? Bush is a lame duck President whose popularity has plummeted because of the failure of US forces to curb sectarian violence in Iraq. The fact that no weapons of mass destruction were found in Iraq has severely undermined the perceived integrity of the administration. The real enemy who clearly is developing weapons of mass destruction is Iran and there seems to be some lack of resolve in dealing with the problem. The president now and then makes statements to remind everyone what the US will do if and when. There are those in Washington that want Bush to pressure Israel into concessions hoping a slight diffusion in the overall tension in the Middle East will also lower tensions between the US and Iran. Former secretary of state James Baker is a primary proponent of this type of appeasement of Iran. The current Secretary of state Condi Rice seems to have adopted Bakers policy at least partially. This would explain the upcoming November summit that will bring Israeli and Palestinian leaders together in Washington. Many analysts firmly believe that Mr. Bush will not leave office without settling the Iran issue. He has roughly 16 months left to decide policy and direct an attack that is not a long time. A likely scenario would be a surprise attack by cruise missiles that would simultaneously destroy all nuclear facilities and missile silos preventing Iran from retaliating. It is highly likely that each nuclear facility and each command center are being studied and made targets for multiple warheads. Israel Americas ally in the region will be the nearest and most likely target of Iran if attacked. If the Americans want to warn Israel of an impending strike this might spoil the element of surprise that the US is counting on. Only the CIA and other western intelligence groups really know when Iran will be capable of producing a nuclear bomb. A few months before that date the US will issue an ultimatum to Iran and then one bright morning send hundreds if not thousands of cruise missiles to predetermined targets in Iran. That should be the next phase in WW3. |
