Pakistan in turmoil over defacto martial law

Pakistan in state of emergency

The President of Pakistan Musharif has declared defacto martial Law bringing world wide condemnation. More than 500 people have been arrested in extensive sweeps of anti government dissidents. These so called dissidents have included the former chief justice of the Pakistan Supreme Court.

It is widely believed that Musharif is afraid of losing power in upcoming elections scheduled for January. Musharif will not allow elections and promises to rescind

“Emergency measures “in due course. It is clear to most analysts that these emergency measures will be in place for a long time.
In an update of latest developments it has been reported that
Hundreds of police were firing tear gas and swinging batons with lawyers Monday. Security forces across Pakistan blockaded courts to prevent protests against President Gen. Pervez Musharraf's declaration of a state of emergency.

The United States is worried about Musahrifs actions but also worried about rising Islamic militancy in the country.

It’s not clear how this crisis will resolve itself.
