War in Gaza
Has Israel started its Gaza incursion? Early Tuesday morning the Israeli army has entered the southern sector of the Gaza strip in what the Israeli army spokesman described as routine operations. It doesn’t sound routine as 20-30 tanks accompanied by infantry and bulldozers took control of a section of the Chan Yunis refugee camp. Four or more members of the Islamic Jihad were killed in the incursion while four Israeli soldiers were slightly injured in the first part of the operation. Israel has been warning for a long time it would be sending forces into the strip to try to stop rocket attacks. The incursion comes at a delicate time as the first negotiating round of a renewed peace effort was set to get underway. It is unclear if these talks will even get started as the fighting may scuttle the talks from go. There already has been consternation on the Arab side as Israel has insisted on building 305 housing units in Jerusalem. The Arab side claims that part and other parts of Jerusalem as their own. The Israelis counter this claim as saying Jerusalem is part of Israel and will not limit itself on building there. It’s hard to say how these negotiations will go forward. Looks more like war than peace. |
