Jerusalem
Just Days after a Government appointed commission placed Blame squarely on the shoulders of Israeli prime minister; political chaos seems to be developing. The prime culprits in the gross mismanagement of the latest Lebanon war the prime minister and his defense minister are adamant about carrying on as if nothing serious has happened. The Israeli public believes something has happened and is demanding immediate resignation of both men. The prime ministers approval rating has dropped to 0 from the 2-3% he enjoyed a few weeks ago. Its hard to imagine a lower approval rating for any democratically elected leader of a country. What’s to happen now? Most analysts say that sooner or later Olmert will have to step down as public outcry becomes very intense. Other coalition options for his replacement seem very problematic which might mean new elections very quickly. These may happen as early as August. This all may become even more complicated as Israel seems to be facing a two front war in the summer. The commission emphasized in its harsh report the lack of military action in response to Terrorist activity very close to the Israeli border. If the country and its present or future leadership is to adhere to the commissions finding that would mean one thing. A surprise preemptive attack on the chizballah in the north and the Hamas led government in the Gaza strip. These strikes are bound to happen soon. Things are never boring in this part of the world. |
